We are at an inflection point:  GenAI will either trigger the extinction of public interest media or catalyze a reimagined, more equitable information ecosystem. 

Digital news consumers in the Global South are leading a global trend, bypassing news outlets in favor of social media, influencers and “ordinary people”. This shift is at odds with media business models based on “reader revenue” and ad-driven monetization.

In the Global South, where economic pressures on media are greatest, the coming months and years will be critical to ensuring the informed and equitable use of new technologies that are in the public interest.

Durable solutions call for shared learning, innovation, and collective agendas. For the first time in 2025, media leaders in Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa are joining forces to host a series of regional and international convenings to examine homegrown solutions to sustain journalism amid technological disruption.
